Shaping a Healthy Tomorrow:
The road to value-based
Healthcare

30 May 2024, Divani Caravel Hotel (Ilissos Hall)

In a world that is constantly evolving, our healthcare systems must evolve in tandem, transcending traditional paradigms to embrace a future centered around value. The road we tread is not just a path of progress; it’s a commitment to placing value at the heart of our healthcare endeavors. It’s about prioritizing outcomes, enhancing patient experiences, and ensuring that every healthcare intervention is a meaningful step toward the well-being of individuals and communities. To this end, this year’s Future of Healthcare in Greece Conference will focus its proceedings on a transformative journey, where the quality of care takes precedence over mere quantity. Our focus is singular but profound — the adoption of a value-based healthcare approach and our ability to deliver meaningful and sustainable value to individuals and communities shaping a healthier tomorrow.

In Greece we strive for a fundamental economic and social transformation, affecting economic activity but also technologies, attitudes and institutions. Extensive health system reforms have been ongoing since 2010, including the strengthening and expansion of publicly provided primary care services and digital transformation. There has also been reinvigorated focus on prevention and tackling risk factors through a new national public health plan. Challenges remain in ensuring accessibility and affordability of care, increasing budget spending on health and strengthening medical and nursing staff. Now an ambitious systemic and legal paradigm shift is needed to allow access for all, which entails a radical reappraisal of current practices and the needed escalation of transformation including transition from hospital-based systems to primary care, community, and social care–based systems.

Why Value-Based Healthcare?

Value-based healthcare is more than a concept; it’s a philosophy that asserts that true success in healthcare is measured not just by the volume of services rendered but by the positive impact on the lives of those we serve. It’s a paradigm that shifts the focus from a system fixated on illness to one that proactively promotes health and well-being.

The road to value-based healthcare is not just a route; it’s a commitment to reshape the very fabric of our healthcare systems. It signifies a departure from traditional models, shifting the paradigm from reactive care to proactive health management. Value-based healthcare emphasizes outcomes, patient experiences, and the efficient use of resources.

Scope of the Conference:

The Conference, one of the biggest annual events on healthcare policies in Greece, organized this year under the special theme “Shaping a Health Tomorrow: The road to value – based Healthcare” will focus its proceedings on the adoption of a value-based healthcare approach and our ability to deliver meaningful and sustainable value to individuals and communities shaping a healthier tomorrow.

The conference aims to highlight what a possible healthier future might mean for the various interest groups involved, and which questions policymakers will respectively have to face. The next decade will see considerable transformation in how health systems are designed, propelled by opportunities such as digital health, growing consumerism, and mounting financial constraints. The Covid-19 pandemic has also necessitated and accelerated significant transformations.

Having recognized the links between health and wellbeing, social stability and economic performance, governments must restructure traditional ministerial departments to be better at handling the interconnectedness of factors which determine health. To this end, decision-makers, experts, and community members from the public and private sector, civil society, and academia will come together to envision how we can build a Healthy Tomorrow where healthcare is not just a service but a value-driven collaboration, where healthier and more resilient societies emerge as the true markers of success.
